Getting to the trailhead and back

The hike is one-way, so the logistics matter more than the walk. You start up in Bomerano, finish above Positano, and use buses to connect the two ends.

The easiest way: let someone else drive

A guided hike with transfers picks you up, drops you at the trailhead and brings you back at the end. Staying in Positano? A private transfer takes you straight to Bomerano so you can walk home along the trail.

By bus from Amalfi

SITA buses run from Amalfi’s bus terminal on the seafront up to Agerola. Ask for, or watch for, the Bomerano stop, which is next to the trailhead square. The ride takes about 40 minutes. Buy your ticket beforehand at a tabacchi, bar or newsstand near the terminal: sales on board aren’t guaranteed. Services aren’t frequent and timetables change with the season, so check the current SITA times the day before and aim for a morning bus.

From Positano

There’s no direct bus: you change in Amalfi, or start from the Positano end and walk it in reverse. The options are compared in hiking the Path of the Gods from Positano.

From Sorrento

Take the SITA bus along the coast to Amalfi and change there for Agerola. Expect around two hours or more each way, longer in summer traffic. From Sorrento, a tour with a transfer saves a lot of time.

From Naples

Doing it independently in a day from Naples means a long chain of trains and buses. If Naples is your base, a guided day trip with transport is the realistic option.

By car

You can drive to Agerola: the CAI trail sheet notes free parking there. But the hike ends on the other side of the mountain, so you have to come back for the car, either by bus via Amalfi or by walking the route both ways. For most people, the bus is simpler.

Getting back from Nocelle

  • Into Positano: take the small Mobility Amalfi Coast bus from Nocelle via Montepertuso to Piazza dei Mulini, or walk down roughly 1,700 steps to the coast road at Arienzo.
  • Back to Amalfi or Sorrento: from Positano, take the SITA coastal bus. In season, ferries also link Positano with Amalfi and Sorrento, a relaxed way to end the day if the timings work.

Summer buses fill up. On the coast road in July and August, full buses sometimes don’t stop. Leave yourself plenty of time for the trip back, especially if you have a ferry or dinner booking.

Common questions

Can I buy a bus ticket from the driver?

Don’t rely on it. Buy SITA tickets in advance from a tabacchi, bar or newsstand, and validate them when you board.

What time should I start?

Early. A morning bus from Amalfi gets you on the trail before the heat and the crowds, and leaves time for the slow trip back.
